pubmed-article:19622350 | pubmed:abstractText | Chronic inflammation of the airways and lung parenchyma plays a major role in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. CD40 signaling has been linked to pathogenic processes of chronic inflammatory diseases. After interaction with its ligand CD154 (CD40L), CD40 induces a broad variety of chronic inflammatory responses, inducing the release of inflammatory mediators.
