Critical ischemia refers to chronic hypoxia, which threatens the viability of the lower limb. Annually 2600 to 5300 Finns develop critical lower limb ischemia. Based on the ageing of the population and increase in the incidence of diabetes, their number will increase. According to studies conducted in Finland during the last decade, amputations will decrease with an increase in vascular reconstructions of limbs. Blood vessel occlusions and stenoses can be more commonly treated with endovascular procedures.
