Dysesthesia and sensory and reflex loss in the legs developed in a patient treated for seizures with phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin) for one year. Her serum drug levels had been in the therapeutic range, and no other clinical toxic reactions had been noted. The peripheral neuropathy resolved when phenytoin therapy was discontinued.
