Bacterial translocation (BT) to mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) in cirrhosis has been linked to impaired host defence. Phagocytosis by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNLs) is the primary event in the killing of bacteria but has not been investigated in relation to the presence of BT.
