Methylene blue photo-inactivated plasma (MBPIP) has been reported to be less effective than fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) in the treatment of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, which suggests a reduced content of the von Willebrand factor metalloprotease ADAMTS-13 in MBPIP.
