Gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum may be severe with a high risk of blindness, therefore prophylaxis is mandatory. Antibiotic eye drops and ointments are less effective to prevent chlamydial ophthalmia, usually less severe. Both microorganisms may be responsible to prematurity and perinatal deaths.
