Tachycardia during anesthesia should be avoided, especially during off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Decreasing heart rate without reducing cardiac contractility is an ideal goal. To achieve this, the authors attempted to block the cardiac nerves by pericardial administration of local anesthetic.
