Estrogens regulate bone mass by binding to the estrogen receptor (ER)-alpha as well as ER-beta. The specific ERalpha cofactor retinoblastoma-interacting zinc finger protein (RIZ)-1 enhances ERalpha function in the presence of estrogen.
