Pulsatile blood flow has been regarded to be of importance for the regulation of endocrine organs. A new generation of continuous flow mechanical blood pumps is now available for clinical application. Patients with implanted MicroMed-DeBakey axial pumps show nonphysiologic low-pulsatile blood flow profiles, and therefore it appeared to be of interest to evaluate their possible effect on the endocrine system.
