Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are related to tissue destruction and remodeling events in periodontal diseases. A single nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region of human MMP-9 gene is associated with the risk of some inflammatory diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between MMP-9 promoter polymorphism and severe generalized chronic periodontitis in a Turkish population.
