Febrile neutropenia causes significant morbidity and mortality in patients receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy. Antibiotic and granulocyte colony stimulating factor prophylaxis reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia but uncertainty remains regarding their role in clinical practice. We review recent literature to clarify the issue.
