Under-representation of BME groups in senior NHS management positions is still rife, and the mentoring scheme is seen as a key way of tackling the problem. Over 900 top managers are now offering mentoring to BME managers, but take-up varies by location. There is some disagreement about the appropriateness of a programme directed exclusively at BME staff, but future schemes might target other groups.
