The presence of gastric cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity detected by cytologic examination is an important prognostic factor. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique amplifying carcinoembryonic antigen mRNA was recently introduced to detect these cells more sensitively.
