The pathological changes in systemic sclerosis are characterised by severe organ fibrosis, obliteration of arteries and arterioles and disturbance of immunological functions. Recent research has yielded new insight into the complex pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis, with new therapeutic options as a possible consequence.
