Hypertension is associated with functional and morphological alterations of the endothelium, which disturbs delicate balance of endothelium-derived factors resulting in endothelial dysfunction. The endothelial dysfunction could then facilitate the maintenance of elevated peripheral resistance, which would favor the occurrence of atherosclerosis.
