Fluoroquinolone prophylaxis during neutropenia in patients with cancer has been associated with decreased incidence of gram-negative bacteremia. Bacterial antimicrobial resistance is likely to cause a progressive lack of efficacy of fluoroquinolones, but no convincing evidence from clinicoepidemiologic observations has proved this hypothesis.
