The authors report upon 773 fractures of the lower leg investigated from 1979 to 1989. They included 38 tibial fractures combined with fractures of the ankle joint. According to the mechanism of the fractures they were divided into: isolated tibial shaft fractures, transverse, segmental and communicated fractures and external rotation fractures of the tibial shaft combined with additional lesions of the ankle joint.
