Oxidant stress contributes to vascular injury and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that estrogen treatment of ovariectomized rats decreases O(2)(-) by decreasing the activity of NAD(P)H oxidase and this reduction in O(2)(-) could have a vasculoprotective effect.
