Although recent studies have emphasized the pathogenic role of intrarenal muscular arteries in patients with diabetic nephropathy, notice has not been taken of their pathological characteristics. We focused on medial smooth muscle cell (SMC) injury and the involvement of glycoxidation and complement activation.
