Portal circulation can be evaluated in a relatively noninvasive manner by per-rectal portal scintigraphy. We used this method to evaluate portal hemodynamics in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and idiopathic portal hypertension. We did the procedures simultaneously in some patients to examine the relation between portal circulation and hepatic functional reserve in these diseases.
