Lockart, Royce Z., Jr. (The University of Texas, Austin). Variations in the abilities of several lines of L cells to produce and to be affected by interferon. J. Bacteriol. 89:117-122. 1965.-The amounts of interferon produced by three different lines of L cells and mouse embryonic cells when inoculated with two strains of Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) were determined. One cell line consistently produced more interferon than the others. NDV stimulated more interferon than did WEE virus in all the cell lines tested. The interferons failed to show homologous specificity in their ability to inhibit virus production in the three cell lines. The cell line that produced the most interferon also was most sensitive to viral inhibition. This cell line was also most sensitive to the viral inhibitory ability of an interferon prepared in mouse embryonic cells.
