Heterosexual human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission accounts for most cases of HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome worldwide. Moreover, in the developed world the proportion of individuals infected heterosexually is rising faster than the proportion infected by other routes, with an increase in the number of women infected. Defining the factors associated with heterosexual transmission may help control new infections.
