The effects of haloperidol on retention of avoidance during its extinction in C57BL/6J mice were shown to depend on a behavioral stereotype (aggressive or submissive). In submissive mice, haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg) injected an hour before training stabilized retrieval of the conditioned reflex in repeated testings (up to 17 days) as compared to its fast extinction in control animals. In aggressive mice, on the contrary, haloperidol reduced the retention of the memory trace retrieval. It is suggested that divergent haloperidol effects on extinction of passive avoidance in mice with alternative behavioral strategies are determined by the features of organization of the mesolimbico-cortical dopaminergic system and emotional state, in particular, anxiety.
