PIP: An evaluation of a rapid immunological test for the detection of early pregnancy is reported. Patients tested included normal pregnant women at various times of gestation, postpartum patients, nonpregnant women with normal menstrual cycles, patients presenting with amenorrhea, postmenopausal patients, and male patients. 75 consecutive urines were assayed by the new immunologic technique and compared with the biologic assay using the male toad, Bufo marinus. In the immunologic test 1 drop of antiserum containing antibody to human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is placed on a glass slide which has been blackened on 1 side to facilitate reading. 1 drop of urine is then mixed with the antiserum and the slide gently rotated for 30 seconds. 2 drops of latex antigen are added and the slide rotated for 2 minutes. The test is positive if agglutination is absent. There were 320 urine specimens subjected to the immunologic tests. 113 non pregnant urines served as controls. False negative tests were absent from the samples tested in patients in the first trimester of pregnancy. In the other 2 trimesters there were 3 false negatives. A quantitative method for HCG titers is described. The immunologic test has increased sensitivity over the biologic test. The advantages of the slide method include the rapidity of the test results, its simplicity, and its sensitivity.
