PIP: In response to the question whether postvasectomy infection is increasing, the author presumed that as numbers of vasectomies increase, the proportion of operations done without the best surgical technique or sterility may rise. Superficial infections, which respond well to antibiotics, appear within 3-4 days after the operation. If infections occur in groups of patients, the operator has failed in aseptic technique. If not the patient's poor hygiene is the probable cause. Deep infections of the vas or epididymus or both are much more longlasting and difficult to treat. Infection rate is about 1-2% and may be caused by use of solk rather than nylon sutures, or respiratory or other untreated infections arising within 1 week of surgery.
