PIP: A randomized multi-centre clinical comparative study of the stainless steel ring, VCu 200, and TCu 220 was conducted in 23 centers in 13 provinces or cities from July 1983 to March 1984 and followed-up for two years. A total of 6236 cases were recruited. Among them, 45 cases were lost to follow-up. 210 cases were randomly allocated for examinations of menstrual blood loss and related hemoglobin changes. The cumulative continuation rate/100 women year were 68.1% for stainless steel ring, 86.0% for VCu 200 and 87.6% for TCu 220. The stainless steel ring showed a significantly higher expulsion and pregnancy rates (p0.001), but its discontinuation rate due to medical reasons was the lowest among the three types of IUD studied. The study indicated that side effects, including bleeding and infection, occurred the most frequently within first month after insertion for all three IUDs, and the stainless steel ring group had the lowest rate among the three. The incidence of side effects are similar in VCu 200 and TCu 220. The increased menstrual blood loss and reduction of hemoglobin level were observed among users of all the three IUDs. They did not return to the preinsertion levels at the 24th postinsertion menstrual cycle. However, it showed marked improvement as compared with the 3rd postinsertion cycles.
