PIP: Steptoe's technique of laparoscopic sterilization has been used on 1350 patients, on an outpatient basis, primarily as a form of contraception. In addition, 61 patients have had puerperal sterilization and 189 were sterilized at the time of vaginal termination of pregnancy. Interval sterilization is performed under general anesthesia with intubation and controlled ventilation and muscle relaxation. Wound clips are used to close the incision. The patient is discharged after a few hours. During the puerperium special care must be taken because of the increased vascularity. Incidence of ectopic pregnancy was 0.13% (two cases). Bleeding (three cases) was the only other complication reported. Advantages of laparoscopic sterilization compared with vasectomy are no need for hospitalization, immediate effectiveness, non-interference with sexual function, tubal patency can be more readily restored, and greater acceptance by women over 31 than by men.
