In recent years, attention has been paid to the influence of the particle fraction < or = 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) among suspended particulate matter (SPM) on health. However, the present status of particle contamination in Japan has hitherto not been adequately clarified. To determine particle contamination in the outdoor air around Kagawa Medical School located on a hill in the suburb of Takamatsu City, we measured SPM according to diameter between February 1999 and January 2000.
