First the most important problems of shiftworkers are discussed, i. e. living against the "inner clock", disturbances of sleep and appetite, gastrointestinal complaints, diseases, disturbances of the social life, faults and accidents. Thereafter a list of potenzial measures to reduce the problems of shiftworkers is presented and one measure -the design of shift systems according to new ergonomic recommendations- is explained.
