Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy but is none the less rare. Some aspects of its management remain controversial. Previous audits of patient management in the United Kingdom have revealed deficiencies, especially in communication between specialists. We have audited patient management in a large university-associated teaching hospital, assessing points of good practice identified from published guidelines and reviews, and have compared findings in groups of patients managed jointly by specialists with an interest in thyroid cancer (including surgeon, endocrinologist and oncologist) with a group managed by other clinicians outside that setting.
