The apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon 4 allele is a marker of adverse outcome following head injury and intracerebral hemorrhage. Transgenic animal data in a focal cerebral ischemia model suggest that the epsilon 4 allele increases infarct size and functional impairment.
