In some geographic areas birch pollen represents the most prominent cause for airborne allergic diseases. Up to 70% of patients allergic to birch pollen are hypersensitive to fruits, especially apples. Associations have been found, in some instances, with a sensitivity to aeroallergens and HLA class II genes.
