More than 14,000 cases of AIDS have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control as of October 1985. Two to five times that number of people were reported to have the AIDS-related conditions. An additional 12,000 cases of AIDS will have been reported by mid-year. In light of these statistics, an ever increasing number of AIDS patients will be coming to the operating room. How much at risk are health care workers and what precautions should be taken, particularly by anesthesiologists when working with patients' airway?
