A growing literature confirms that for a large spectrum of patients day hospitalization may produce outcomes superior to those attained through hospitalization in an inpatient setting. This paper explores patient characteristics and characteristics of the day setting itself that may be responsible for the superior outcomes observed. In addition, the authors discuss possible factors contributing to the unanswered questions that remain regarding who does best and why.
