All three isozymes help to regulate inositol phosphate metabolism by phosphorylation of the second messenger |FRAME: INOSITOL-1-4-5-TRISPHOSPHATE| to form |FRAME: CPD-506|. This activity is responsible for regulating the levels of a large number of inositol polyphosphates that are important in cellular signaling. A cDNA encoding |FRAME: HS06405-MONOMER| was isolated from human brain |CITS: [2175886]| and expressed in E. coli in a truncated form |CITS: [1847047]|. Biochemical characterization revealed three active fractions with apparent molecular weight of 580-64 kDa, 45-50 kDa and 3-39 kDa |CITS: [1847047]|. The author speculate that the higher molecular weight form may have been an isozyme (the two isozymes |FRAME: HS07103-MONOMER| and |FRAME: HS01533-MONOMER| are both larger), while the smaller form probably represented a degradation product. The enzyme is subject to both calcium/calmodulin and protein phosphorylation regulation |CITS: [2176078][1847047]|.
