NCI: Expressed as alternative isoforms in liver, heart, skeletal muscle, kidney, early erythroid cells, brain, lung, placenta and pancreas by human ACSL1 Gene (Long-Chain Fatty-Acid-CoA Ligase Family), 698-aa 78 kDa Acyl-CoA Synthetase Long-Chain Family Member 1 is a magnesium-cofactor type III membrane protein likely located in microsomes, outer mitochondrial membranes and peroxisomal membranes. Preferentially using palmitoleate, oleate and linoleate, ACSL1 converts free long-chain fatty acids into fatty acyl-CoA esters for biosynthesis of cellular lipids and degradation via beta-oxidation.
