NCI: Signal induction is the intercellular or intracellular transfer of information (biological activation/inhibition) through a signal pathway. In each signal transduction system, an activation/inhibition signal from a biologically active molecule (e.g., hormone, neurotransmitter, etc.) is transferred to a receptor molecule through a physical binding interaction that alters the conformational and functional state of the receptor molecule and promotes an alteration in cell function.
