NCI: Intestinal enterocytes are low columnar to cuboidal cells comprising the majority of the epithelial tissue in the intestine and colon. They have both absorptive and secretory functions, absorbing water, sodium and short-chain fatty acids while secreting bicarbonate and potassium. Colonocytes originate from stem cells located at the base of the crypts. Enterocyte production, differentiation, and turnover occurs in topographically distinct regions of crypts. The transformation of colonic epithelial cells are frequently involved in colorectal cancers.
