NCI: A cell of the uterine wall immediately underling the endometrial epithelium. Endometrial stromal cells proliferate and respond to the cyclic variations of estrogen and progesterone. These cells produce growth factors and hormones that mediate the proliferative response of epithelial cells to the steroid hormones estrogen and progesterone. In response to embryo implantation, endometrial stromal cells accumulate lipid and glycogen.
