NCI: Part of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) was a clinical trial designed to see whether taking the drug tamoxifen would prevent breast cancer in women who are at an increased risk of developing the disease. The BCPT also looked at whether taking tamoxifen would decrease the number of heart attacks and reduce the number of bone fractures in these women. The study began recruiting participants in April 1992 and closed enrollment in September 1997.
