Birth defects can also affect the face. They can cause underdeveloped or unusually prominent facial features or a lack of facial expression. <a href='http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/cleftlipandpalate.html'>Cleft lip and palate</a> are a common facial birth defect.</p>
