NCI: A protein involved in autophagy (the process by which a cell destroys proteins and other substances in its cytoplasm). Beclin 1 is found at lower levels in several types of cancer cells than in normal cells. It is a type of tumor suppressor.,NCI: Beclin-1 (450 aa, ~52 kDa) is encoded by the human BECN1 gene. This protein is involved in autophagy, apoptosis and host defense.
