NCI: Deubiquitinating Enzymes are hydrolases that catalyze cleavage of ubiquitinated substrates with addition of H2O at the point of cleavage. Protein ubiquitination regulates the half-lives of many proteins by targeting them for degradation. Ubiquitination and deubiquitination enzymes participate in highly regulated protein degradation, chromatin remodeling, heat shock, cell cycle progression, differentiation, antigen presentation, apoptosis, signal transduction, transcriptional activation, biological clocks, receptor down regulation, and endocytosis.
