UMD: Compresses or packs designed to apply cold therapy to a specific body surface. These devices consist typically of soft pads made of several layers of cotton, gauze, or linen (i.e., compresses), or compact plastic or fabric bags (i.e., packs) that may contain temperature-retaining substances such as gels that are capable of conforming to the contour of the body. Cold compresses or packs are cooled in cold water, a refrigerator, or a freezer; some compresses become cold due to a chemical reaction. Cold compresses or packs are used mainly to reduce pain, swelling, bruising, and/or bleeding.
