UMD: Stimulators used to regulate or substitute the normal rate at which a biologic center establishes the regular intervals of activity (rhythm) of an organ (e.g., heart, lungs). These stimulators control the pace by means of some artificial (e.g., electric generator) stimuli. Pacemakers can be designed either for continuous use (usually implantable devices) or for temporary external use.
