UMD: Solid-state lasers with a rod of yttrium-lithium- fluoride (YLF) garnet crystal doped with neodymium, a rare earth element, as an active medium. Their emission wavelength is typically 1,053 nm (near infrared). These lasers can be operated in continuous, pulsed, Q-switched, and mode-locked modes; they allow the generation of pulses of shorter duration than Nd:YAG lasers. The laser energy may be delivered through a flexible optical glass fiber or through a set of mirrors (e.g., optical system of a microscope).
