NCI: Human glutathione peroxidase 1 protein (201 aa, 21.899 kD) is encoded by the GPX1 gene. This soluble, cytosolic enzyme catalyses the reduction of hydrogen peroxide to water at the expense of reduced glutathione which is oxidized to glutathione disulfide. Lipid and steroid hydroperoxides are also substrates of this enzyme. Deficiencies in glutathione peroxidase 1 are associated with hemolytic anemia.
