NCI: Human melanocortin 1 receptor protein (317 aa, ~34.7 kDa) is encoded by the melanocortin 1 receptor gene (MC1R). This integral membrane protein belongs to the G protein coupled receptor superfamily, and is a regulator of eumelanin and phaeomelanin production. These proteins are directly involved in pigmentation phenotypes.,NCI: A protein found in skin and eye cells that make melanin (a pigment that gives color to the skin and helps protect it from damage by ultraviolet light). People with certain changes in the gene for MC1R have a higher risk of developing melanoma (skin cancer that begins in melanocytes).,MSH: A melanocortin receptor subtype found primarily in MELANOCYTES. It shows specificity for ALPHA-MSH and ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE. Loss of function mutations of the type 1 melanocortin receptor account for the majority of red hair and fair skin recessive traits in human.
