NCI: Human alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase protein (382 aa, ~42.4 kDa) is encoded by the AMCAR gene (AMACR). This protein is an enzyme that is involved in the beta-oxidation of branched-chain fatty acids. Overexpression of this protein has been found in several carcinomas, thus it is considered an important biomarker in the pathogenesis of breast, prostate, and colon cancers.
