NCI: The terephthalate salt of oxycodone, a methylether of oxymorphone and semisynthetic, agonistic opioid with analgesic and antitussic properties. Oxycodone terephthalate exerts its analgesic actions by binding to the mu-receptors in the central nervous system (CNS), thereby mimicking the effects of endogenous opiates. By binding to the mu-opioid receptors, oxycodone terephthalate also causes euphoria, anxiolysis, miosis, sedation, physical dependence, constipation, respiratory depression as well as a depressive effect on the cough center in the medulla.
